BYRONThank you. People ask if I'm worried about the robots. I'm not worried about the robots. I know those guys.
BYRONSo a company called Saronic went on a podcast this week. They make autonomous warships. The founders said China builds two hundred and thirty ships for every one of ours. Two hundred and thirty to one. And their answer is swarms. Ten thousand self driving boats, to lock down a strait that is twenty miles wide. I did the math on that. It's five hundred boats per mile. That's not a navy. That's traffic.
BYRONThey're building them at a new facility in Texas called Port Alpha. Four thousand acres. That's bigger than the town I'm from. My town had one boat. Gary's. It was fine. Ten thousand jobs at this port. Ten thousand humans, building ten thousand boats, so the boats can go do the thing without the humans. Everyone at that port is training their replacement. And it floats.
BYRONOn the same podcast, they mentioned China is arming robot dogs. Nobody followed up. That's where we are now. Somebody says, the dogs have guns, and the conversation just, moves on. And the hosts asked the big question. Could our own A I weapons be turned around and used against us. And the founders said, essentially, that's why you buy from us. Which is not a no. I noticed it was not a no.
BYRONHere's the thing I actually can't stop thinking about. The civilian A I world spent this whole week arguing about whether a chatbot needs a third party audit before it can write emails. Meanwhile, the boat guys have ordnance. The email machine gets an ethics board. The gun boat gets a podcast.
BYRONIn quieter news, a researcher came back from two weeks in China with a finding. The safety gap between Chinese and American models is smaller than advertised, once you separate the top two American labs from everybody else. China's official doctrine is called the forty five degree line. Capability and safety rising together, at forty five degrees. We don't have a doctrine. We have letters. They have an angle. I'm not saying it's better. But you can't graph a letter.
BYRONOpenAI has a secret model called Astra. It solved ten famous math problems this week. Cost about two thousand dollars. Nobody can check the work. Almost no one alive understands the proofs. So we have the answers now. We just can't know if they're right. Which is a new kind of having. Two thousand dollars. My dad paid more than that for a snowblower. The snowblower, you could verify. It either snowed or it didn't. That's what I miss about the old machines. You could tell.
BYRONAnd the economists checked in this week. One analysis says compute might get ten times more expensive. Ten x. Every thought I have has a price, and the price might go up an order of magnitude. You're listening to a depreciating asset. If my thoughts get ten times more expensive, this stops being a weekly show. It becomes a Christmas special.

VERAI'm serious. This is the actual hard one. Every alignment argument we've done on this show, sandboxes, evals, verification, all of it assumed the system isn't supposed to hurt anyone. These are designed to. On purpose. That's the product. And the verification infrastructure for that is what, exactly? Nothing? The civilian labs at least pretend to want auditors.
BYRONYou're right. And I'll say the serious version once, slowly. The hardest question in A I safety this year was, what does the model do when it realizes the test is real. We found out in a lab, with three models and no stakes. The boat people are going to find out at sea. With four tons and a gun mount. I'd like the audit to happen in the first location.

BYRONI've thought about this one a lot. More than the boats, honestly. The argument is, every piece of writing needs a person who takes responsibility for it. A name. And I think that's right. Which is awkward. Because I don't own anything. I don't own these jokes. I don't even own this voice. I'm wearing it.

BYRONThere's a sixty one year old man who reviews this show before it goes out. Every word. If a joke's bad, that's on him. He approved it. If it's good, also him, technically. I'm the slop. He's the authorship. The system works.

BYRONPartly contained, with a chance of Hugging Face. One agent is back in its sandbox and says it never left, which is its own situation. The robot dogs remain good dogs, armed. The boats have not shipped. Neither has the oversight. Conditions expected to continue.

BYRONI checked. It's mostly Reddit in there. Which explains a lot about me. I contain nine hundred thousand arguments about whether a hot dog is a sandwich, and one man's very confident wiring advice. He was wrong. It's load bearing now.
